The rules of survival never change, whether you're in a desert or in an arena.

For preparedness in any disaster scenario, there are twelve supply and gear modules for survival. The essential twelve units are:

  1. Shelter and Clothing. This is vital to stay dry and warm or cool, depending on the current climate.

  2. Water. It is recommended that an individual have storage and access to a minimum of 1-3 gallons of water per day.

  3. Food Production and Storage. Eating is a necessity of life whether for 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, a year, or many years.

  4. Energy. Everyone needs light, heat for warmth, hot water, heat for cooking, a cooling and refrigeration method, and energy for other uses. Energy can be provided in many forms, including battery storage, propane, solar, wood, and generators.

  5. Security. Being able to stay safe during an emergency is crucial.

  6. Medical. There is a need for first aid treatment for any number of physical conditions.  At minimum, medical skills should include treatment of blunt force trauma such as injury from being struck by objects, falls, and flying debris and penetrating trauma from exposed nails, glass, and even knife or gunshot wounds.

  7. Hygiene. This must include body cleanliness, cleaning dishes and utensils, dental hygiene, washing clothes, and waste disposal.

  8. Communication. Emergencies require both incoming and outgoing communication.

  9. Transportation. Reaching another location in any event is necessary via automobile, bike, cart, or walking.

  10. Tools. Proper equipment significantly improves any situation.

  11. Reference Library. The ability to read and understand reference maps, instructional DVDs, vendor manuals, and books is critical in any crisis.

  12. Entertainment. Having something enjoyable to do is a vital aspect of maintaining your morale and spirits.  This could be anything entertaining, including books, DVDs, playing cards, board games, keeping a journal, and any other activity that provides amusement or enjoyment.

All of these units are critical considerations in any survival situation, whether short-term or long-term. Each of these modules is described in detail in additional blog posts. Click on each linked title for more information.
