Someone To Talk To

Updated: Feb 11, 2018

There was a time when nails were high-tech. There was a time when people had to be told how to use a telephone. Technology is just a tool. People use tools to improve their lives.

Being able to obtain information on a local, regional, national, and even international level is a key element of disaster preparedness. There are several effective and economical methods to achieve obtaining outside information. One of the most effective to obtain local, regional, and national news is an AM/FM radio. Shortwave radio is an economical method to obtain worldwide information. Using Shortwave radio, I have picked up English-speaking stations in Europe and Asia. A shortware radio such as the Eton Traveler III AM/FM/LW/SW radio can be obtained from Amazon for $69.95. Ensure you have extra batteries or obtain a radio that is recharged by handcrank or solar power.

For two-way communication there are a number of solutions. A telephone landline while stationary will often work even when cell service is lost. Cellphone usage is mobile, but ensure you have the cellphone with you that is charged.

A local economic technology is Family Radio Service (FSR) radios. The FSR radios are hand held two-way radios such as Motorola FRS can be purchased for around $65. Using an accessory two-way hands-free headset for each FRS provides much better reception, as it goes directly into an ear not via a speaker.

For longer range two-way radio communication, you can use Ham radio technology. Just to listen to Ham radio, no license is required. For transmission during non-emergencies, a federal license is required. To obtain a federal license for most people requires passing a test. Search out a local Ham radio group to obtain location and time of testing. There are a number of review books available and internet sites which provide useful information to study for the exam. I would recommend buying a BaoFeng or Yaesu Ham handheld radio to begin using Ham radio. As you gain expertise and interest in Ham radio, you can choose to obtain more powerful equipment.

While we have focused on electronic communication methods, don’t ignore simple methods of communication, such as each family or group member having a whistle to call for help and a whistle code that denotes various conditions. Have paper and pencil to leave messages at a designated drop location if your family or group become separated. Learn to use hand signals in situations that require silent communication.

Practice and gain experience with your communication technology prior to a disaster. Ensure that you obtain proper protective storage for your electronic equipment. Treat your communication equipment like your welfare and life may depend upon its operation... because it just might!
